Mala Petaka is a vibrant GZDoom-powered 2D pixel art FPS where an angry amnesiac goes on an interplanetary rampage.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer back in 2022, Mala Petaka is a fast paced run ‘n gun FPS where an amnesiac breaks out of a space prison and starts killing hordes of robotic aliens. He doesn’t really know why he’s doing this, but as he makes his way across various universes he’ll hopefully recover his memories. https://zhile365.com/mala-petaka-beta-demo/
Mala Petaka feels quite different to most GZDoom games. It still moves and shoots a lot like DOOM, but the chunky colorful sprites, the superb chiptune soundtrack and the cartoony cutscenes make for a much more lighthearted experience that’s a little reminiscent of Megaman 8-bit Deathmatch. There’s plenty going on under the bonnet too, with lots of enemy types, weapons with alt-fire modes, power-ups (Time Freeze, Rampage, God Mode, etc.) and some very cool use of inter-area portals.
The demo Mala Petaka takes around 20 minutes to play through and has a sizeable amount of content, with an intro area, a large nonlinear level with three differently themed areas, six different weapons (fists included), power-ups, a variety of enemies and a boss fight. The difficulty settings could be tweaked a little bit (normal is quite easy and hard is brutally tough) and the addition of an audio or visual indicator when you’re low on health would be nice, but other than that it’s a fantastic game. It’s the sort of FPS that just makes you smile from ear to ear as you blast big colorful enemies with big colorful guns. Highly recommended.
